September 2017 Newsletter

Our branch is continuing to increase in numbers and we currently have 650 retired officers including specials and civilian workers. Bernard Cook has been working hard preparing holidays and trips for you our members. With the changes to the data protection act West Midlands Police will no longer inform us of changes to addresses etc. They notify us of deaths but will no longer give us details of the person notifying a death. If any of your circumstances change, address telephone number or email address can you please notify us and Lloyd House pensions on 0121 626 5040.

Our next walk is on THURSDAY 5TH OCTOBER 2017. This walk of 5 miles is flat and easy, mainly on good ground with no stiles. The walk takes in views of Baddersley Clinton Manor House, Rowington Church, The Grand Union Canal, Trains and Kingswood Junction.

Meet 10.00am for 10.15am start at the NAVIGATION PUBLIC HOUSE (permission gained to park). The Navigation is a canal side pub on the Old Warwick Road, Lapworth, Solihull, B94 6NA. It can be found on the B4439 which runs between Lapworth and Church Rowington and is nearer to Lapworth. Refreshments can be taken at the pub. Boots or strong shoes recommended if weather not good. Any questions contact Ben Whitehouse.

Our 5 a side football section is also going well with football being played every Wednesday at 5pm at St Augustine’s sports center Heathcote Street Radford.

Charity events are regularly done by our members if you are doing something for charity and want it circulating please let me know. As I write this Peter Martin who is in his early 70s is currently walking over 500 miles. Details are below. I am walking the Camino de Santiago- St James Way in Spain, 878 Km/545 miles, from 25 August to 8 October 2017. I start in St Jean Pied de Port which in France, and walk to Santiago de Compostela and then on to the coast at Finisterre in Spain. I am doing it for personal reasons but decided to ask for sponsorship for Zoë's Place. As you probably know Zoe's Place is a home-from-home for babies who have life-limiting or terminal illnesses and special complex needs, offering palliative and respite care for babies/infants from birth to five years old - and is the only Hospice in the UK equipped to treat and care for this age range. Zoe's Place have given me literature  and I have set up on Just Giving, which is www.justgiving.com/peter-martin72  or if anyone wishes to contact me post a message on here. Is it possible you could give me some publicity on the NARPO site to help me with donations.

Deceased members and none members since our last newsletter Lawrence (Larry) Jackson, Raymond Keefe, Samuel Parkinson, John (Jack) Davies, Vic Pearce, Gordon Cunningham, Nick Mackley.

Holidays for 2018

Monday 19 February 2018 5 Days / 4 Nights – Norton Grange Coastal Resort, Isle of Wight - £215 Half Board (Drinks Inclusive 18.00 – 24.00)

Single Room Supplement - Please enquire – all subsidised singles are taken. Enjoy a Warners break in February – it might be cold outside but its lovely and warm at this resort – and all of your activities are on hand and free of charge. Add to this your half board meals plus excellent entertainment every evening....and after 6pm all of your drinks are free of charge (until midnight). The trip also includes a free admission into Osborne House.

Bernie visited Norton Grange in February 2017 – whilst accommodation is in chalets, they are kept very warm, and the main restaurant / lounges etc are just a couple of minutes walk away. All activities were available and easily accessible. If you want to go further afield, the port of Yarmouth is just a 10 minute walk away.

Thursday 5 April 2018 5 Days / 4 Nights – Daish's Hotel, Shanklin, Isle of Wight , Half Board - £159

Single Room Supplement – Please enquire – all subsidised singles are taken.

We did a trip to the Daish's Hotel a few years ago and it was very highly rated – right on the main road and handy for everything in Shanklin. Shanklin itself is an olde world type of resort – lots of thatched buildings, with plenty of teashops, cafes and pubs to choose from. Or you may prefer to go a bit further afield using the excellent bus service that stops outside the hotel.

Monday 1 October 2018 5 Days / 4 Nights – Sands Hotel, Bournemouth, Half Board - £184

Single Room Supplement - £10 per person

The Bournemouth Sands Hotel is ideally located on the West Cliff, just a short stroll from the cliff top park which offers panoramic sea views stretching from the Isle of Wight to Poole and far beyond.

The hotel has a small sun terrace at the front of the hotel, and for 2017 the restaurant is being extended creating a new sun terrace from the bar. Other facilities include a coffee shop, 2 guest lounges and a pool table. The entertainment suite features a dance floor and live nightly entertainment.

Bournemouth town centre and pier is a short walk away and buses stop nearby the hotel regularly for this who don't fancy the walk up the hill on the way back.
