Petition to Help War Veterans in Care
"Dear Members
We are writing to you on behalf of one of our oldest members of Plymouth branch at nearly 101 years old, Ivor. Ivor, a World War II veteran and retired police officer, has been campaigning to change the laws on income tax and care home fees for veterans of World War II for some time, so that they no longer have to pay these after the age of 100 and he has asked if we could kindly make all NARPO members aware of this petition.
The reason that Ivor is campaigning for this change is that our World War II veterans are paying for their care which does not feel right for those who gave so much for this country. There are only about 8000 veterans still alive, albeit some of them will be receiving help for their care. However, the remainder of the veterans are still paying tax and care home fees, for example £5000 a month.
Our veterans fought in the last Great War to end all wars and have paid into this country for over 80 years. As Ivor has said, every Leader of this country has stated in the past that - “The debt we owe them could never be repaid”, but maybe this could be rectified.
Ivor and a fellow veteran, Keith, have set up a petition on the 'gov.uk' site. If this petition gets 10,000 signatures, the government will respond to it. If the petition gets 100,000 signatures, it will be considered for debate in Parliament.
This petition will stay open until 10 October 2026.
